Jannice's recent emails

This is not to alarm you, but it is to inform you and to establish a way of staying informed and up to date if anything develops.  Please respond so we know you have seen this.

Jannice wrote this yesterday:
I am taking Mom to a doctor appointment at St. Mary's tomorrow.  Her doc wants her to be checked out by a heart specialist.  The symptoms are:  pain in her left shoulder.  It was something that happened to her twice and then not ever again. Also, she can't walk very far and her legs get so tired she has to stop.  She walks really slow anyway, but her distance is so short without stopping the doctor didn't like it, and said it was a symptom people have when the heart isn't pumping enough blood for one reason or another. So we will go tomorrow and they will run tests.

This is today:
Did you mean, did I tell anyone else about Mom's tests at the hospital?  If so, no I haven't.  Mom is just sure that all is well and it's just old age that makes her so tired. A couple of weeks ago they did an ultrasound of her heart and it came back fine with flying colors.  Linda knew about that and was horrified she had to have tests on her heart.  I have been through this with Helen Young and also with Dick.  You can have all kinds of tests and still have a heart attack and die. (in the back of my car) The doctor Mom is seeing is the same one that did tests on Helen Young, and on Dick too.  Dick didn't like him and neither did Helen.  He is Asian and they sometimes come across rude or arrogant when I don't think they intend to be, but Dick thought he intended to be, and couldn't help being arrogant because he just was.  But, he is the leading expert in Walla Walla and the tests they run are routine for finding problems so I think we will be fine.

If Mom has a problem and it requires surgery, she won't like that and she is already a little rattled about the appointment. She had to have labs this morning and she was rattled about that. As my dad would say, she didn't know if it was summer or Tuesday. So around here we are trying to act like it is all routine and we've been through it before and we'll just go and do it and all will be fine.  But, praying for her to be calm and hopefully there is nothing wrong with her heart is good, or maybe if there is something, it can be fixed without too much trouble. She gets tired walking back and forth from her apartment to the laundry room.  I get her groceries more often than she goes and does her own shopping, because she is too tired. On her visit with Carol Vonderahe, she couldn't go to any of the places they had planned because she was too tired and Carol was really worried about her. She had one of those episodes of pain in the left shoulder while she was at Carol's and didn't tell Carol, but waited until she got home to tell me. I nearly flipped. I gently suggested we go in to her doctor and tried not to be visibly concerned.  The left shoulder pain was the only symptom Helen Young had.

Her memory has slipped a cog a little too. Her ability to reason in her own mind is weak, and she lives in the 50's and 60's a good part of the time.  However, she is so up to date on current events and sharp at a tack when it comes to the Word of God. It is a very odd combination.

We all need to pray for Mom.  Jannice, please use this blog to quietly update us.  You shared some things here that Mom would not want us to worry about, so she doesn't need to read the entries.

  2. No problem with Mom reading it, she really doesn't want to sit at my computer and read things, she waits for me to print things out for her. Please don't be too concerned, she is pretty much her old self. I give her doctor credit for being so thorough and insisting on these tests. Jannice

  5. (Sorry for the deletes. I was just adding to my post.)
Thanks Jannice, Dick and David. This is a good forum. Our prayers are with all of you.
As for the doctor, good for Walla Walla if he is the leading specialist there; but if a second opinion appears necessary, it could be just a car ride away in Pendleton, Tri Cities, Yakima, Spokane, Portand, Seattle. I can help if needed.
By the way Jannice, what Dad always said to me was, "Winter or Wednesday."

  6. I just got off the phone with Mom. She sounded good. She seemed more worried about Jannice's knee and Dick's shoulder than whatever was going on with her.
I waited for her to bring it up. She said she went in for blood/chlorestoral tests today, and will have more tests tomorrow. She said that she is fine, "it's the doctor who's worried."
I told her it was his job to worry and it's good that he's just covering all the bases.
She said she thought her days of traveling were over because of what happened at Carol's. I told her that maybe it's related to what the doctor will find, and he'll come up with a pill to give her vim and vigor.
But she sounded good and sharp, at least for that moment. --kb

  7. Kevin, she thought the blood tests were for cholesterol because that's the only reason she could think of for blood tests. Dr. SuWong ordered the tests to look for enzymes present in the blood that tell on you if you have even had a very mild heart attack. Also, there is other info there he wants to have before he sees her tomorrow. If I explain all that to her she will just get confused, and a little testy because she's the mother and I'm the kid. Oh yeah, and Kevin, "cut the chatter" OK? JY

  8. By the way. Thanks for making me think of a second opinion, and the possibility of having to go to Portland, if God forbid it comes to that. Just wanted to say, if it does, we're definitely coming to your house. J

  9. At our Wednesday night prayer meeting, we prayed for Mom. I kmow all of us are, but there is something about this group. Things happen. Keep us informed, Jannice.
By the way, I may not have the latest email addresses for Bill and Linda. I am concerned that they haven't responded.

  10. St. Vincents in Beaverton did both of Pete's bypasses. Emanuel claims to have a great cardio unit as well.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. One day and one prayer meeting at a time. --kb
